University Buildings and Elevators
To meet the most recent elevator dimensional standards
a more economically feasible design approach was developed: The addition of new circulation “cores” or “towers” to the exterior of existing buildings.
Though the use of this strategy is widespread and bridges many building typologies, its repeated use in the renovation of university buildings has become prevalent.
South Dakota State University is utilized as a case study
to investigate this design strategy. Plan drawings are collected from the SDSU Facilities Archive.
